Materials

What leather does Alina Schürfeld use?

We work with chrome-free, metal-free, and vegetable-tanned leathers. We also work with bio-certified salmon leather.

What is vegetable-tanned leather?

Vegetable tanning uses natural tannins from bark and plants instead of chemical chrome salts. It takes longer and costs more. The result is leather that develops a patina over time and improves with age rather than deteriorating.

What is chrome-free leather?

Chrome-free leather is tanned without chromium salts, which are commonly used in mass production. Chrome-free tanning is better for the environment and for the people handling the leather during production.

Is Alina Schürfeld a sustainable brand?

Sustainability has been the foundation of the brand since 2009 - not a label added later. We use chrome-free, metal-free, and vegetable-tanned leathers. We produce in small batches to avoid overproduction. We make everything in our own Hamburg manufactory. And we design for longevity - pieces that last for decades, not seasons.

Why Alina Schürfeld

Why did Alina Schürfeld start in 2009?

Sustainability was not a trend in fashion in 2009. It was a conviction. The brand was founded on the belief that leather goods should be made responsibly - with materials that are better for the environment, produced in ways that are transparent and accountable. That hasn't changed.

Why vegetable-tanned, chrome-free leather?

It was the starting point. In 2009, when the brand was founded, vegetable-tanned, chrome-free and metal-free leather was a deliberate choice against the industry standard - not a response to consumer demand, but a conviction about how things should be made. It remains our standard today.

Why does local production in Hamburg matter?

We cut, stitch, skive, edge, and finish every piece in our Hamburg manufactory. Every seam is sewn here. Every edge is finished here. Every decision about quality is made here - not delegated, not contracted out, not compromised by distance.

Why buy from Alina Schürfeld?

We make every piece ourselves, in our own space, with materials we have chosen deliberately. No outsourced production, no compromises we can't see. When you buy from us, you know exactly where your piece was made, by whom, and with what.

Why are the pieces priced the way they are?

Because handwork in Germany costs what it costs. Every piece is made in our Hamburg manufactory, with premium materials, by skilled hands. The price reflects the reality of what it takes to make something properly.
